January is normally a quiet month for Jacana, as farmers are busy in their maize fields during the rainy season, but this year there is plenty of activity on the Jacana grounds and beyond.

New workshop
|
A new workshop is being created between two containers. The containers will serve as storage for the mobile solar pumps and all the equipment we need for agricultural trainings. This workshop will be slightly larger than the others and can serve as a training facility for technical training courses, such as borehole siting (VES), metalworking, manual drilling, solar design training, etc.

Refresher training for drillers
|
Refresher training has begun for the most recently trained group of drillers and four assistants from Petauke. Under the guidance of trainers Moses Banda and Amos Banda, they will drill two boreholes, thoroughly reviewing all the steps. This is to ensure continued quality in Petauke and the surrounding area.

Coaching a new manager from FCMH
|
Jacana started a project in co-operation with Stichting Family in Christ Mission Holland (FCMH). FCMH is based in Mazabuka and is eager to learn how Jacana works. Warren Lupiya, FCMH’s newly appointed project manager, is working with Jacana in Chipata for a month. Together with Collins Musonda, he organised a community meeting in a new area, interviewed farmers, visited 40 farmers and is now training two groups in business, financial and marketing skills. Later, Warren will be coached in how to train farmers in the agricultural skills. After two months, Warren will start a new project in Mazabuka under guidance of Jacana staff.

The New Year's campaign was very successful. Thanks to the support of many people, Jacana raised €11,977. Many farmers can now benefit from the agricultural training and guidance provided by Jacana agricultural trainers.
