Hello ,
Fruit tree training and pruning
Many small-scale farmers have fruit trees. If fruit trees are not trained and pruned properly, the yield will not be optimal and therefore income will be lower. Jacana has designed a course that combines theory and practice for farmers.
|
|
The first training courses were given to farmers participating in the AFAS programme in Lundazi, followed by Chipata and finally Petauke. The farmers greatly appreciate the skills they gained from the training.

Instructions from trainer Bester Sakala
|
What does a one-day pruning training look like?
Theory covering the following topics:
|
- How to prune trees.
- Training young fruit trees (the first three years).
- Basic pruning methods.
- Best time to prune (citrus, mango, avocado trees, bananas and papayas).
- What tools you need.
- How to maintain the tree throughout the year.
- Dos and don'ts.
|
The theory is followed by practical training in the field, where farmers prune a number of trees themselves.

How to desinfect the tools Pruning a citrus tree
|
|
In Chipata, farmers first received practical training at the Jacana office. They practised on avocado trees and bananas. Afterwards, everyone got on a bus and went to Lackson Mtonga to practise pruning citrus trees. Lackson had already cautiously started pruning a few trees months earlier. During the theory lesson in the morning, he had already come to the conclusion that it had not gone entirely well. During the practical lesson, attention could therefore be paid to what had gone wrong and practice could be done on other trees so that everyone could get a good idea of how to prune.

In this way, the farmers learned that with a little effort, you can achieve an optimal yield.
|
However, you do have to keep it up.
