May 2025

Hello ,

Jacana celebrates 10-year anniversary

10 years is quite a milestone and many people thought so with us. During the New Year campaign, a nice amount of money came in through all sorts of channels to throw a nice party with Jacana's staff and board.

Saturday 17 May was the day. Early in the morning, 22 of us left for Livingstone with the aim of visiting Victoria Falls (part of world heritage). A drive of about 1,000 km. After an overnight stay in Kafue (about halfway), the journey continued.

On Monday morning, after a relaxed breakfast, it was finally time for the Big Falls, the first time for most of us. Quite an experience. Across a width of about 1.7 kilometres, the Zambezi River plunges as much as 108 metres deep into the Batoka Canyon. The falls were named by David Livingstone in 1855 after Queen Victoria, but the local name is ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ and means ‘The smoke that thunders’.

Jacana team 2025

After a good rainy season, the team was treated to a huge amount of water. Everyone visibly enjoyed themselves, some with and some without rain coats.

Beautiful rainbows can be seen through the dense fog.

Many of the group also went to the downstream (the Boil pot) of the Falls.

After the Falls, we visited the Livingstone Museum, the oldest and largest museum in Zambia. The museum exhibits important collections on Zambian archaeology, history, culture and natural history, and there is a lot of information about David Livingstone.

On Tuesday morning, the always intense ‘Jacana games’ were held, followed by a refreshing dip in the pool. To finish, we had snacks and drinks and enjoyed the beautiful sunset from a boat on the Zambezi.

On the last day, Dinie and Rik were put in the spotlights. The staff and board had a beautiful memento made by a local artist.

After these two enervating days, we returned home.

It is from the many small moments when while staring, lost in thought, a mouth falls open or a smile from ear to ear appears on someone's face, that you see the impact this trip had.

We are very grateful to all the people who donated so that Jacana staff and board could enjoy an unforgettable week.

THANKS
