Hello ,
Beekeeping project
Jacana has trained more than 100 beekeepers in recent years. These beekeepers live within a radius of 30 km around the office. In 2020 they established a co-operative, Eastern Beekeepers Co-operative (EBC), with the aim of creating joint facilities for processing combed honey and investigating how they can support each other in reaching the market. Currently, 50 beekeepers have joined EBC. Jacana guides EBC in this process and a number of steps have been taken.
Subsequently, a one-year pilot program was started with a donation from Solon Foundation.
This year there are two moments where the beekeepers can bring combed honey for processing, in November/December and in May/June. A temporary manager and honey processor has been appointed.
A number of things will be tested during this pilot year:
- Are the assumptions of the EBC business plan correct and what needs adjustment?
- What is the quality and quantity of the honey and wax?
- Which beekeepers want to sell their honey themselves and who wants to have that done by the co-operative?
- What is the best way to process honey and wax?
The first part of the test is done. We have learned a lot. All these outcomes will be discussed with the EBC members.

Want to become a Solar designers and installers?
This month Jacana started the solar energy project. The team is working hard on preparing a tailor made manual and is looking for future solar designers and installers. We are looking for entrepreneurs who already have experience in working with electricity, preferably car electricians (DC). The first letters are trickling in and interviews will be held at the beginning of February.
Are you from Chipata and do you have:
- experience in electrical installations or car electronics,
- computer skills,
- interest to start or expand your business with designing and installing solar systems?
Then apply for this free training before 7 Feb 2022 by sending an email to solar@jacana.help or simply reply to this email with your name, experience and phone number.
After a short interview, you will be invited to a business training and from there 12 most promising candidates will get intensive technical training.
Development requires energy.
Let’s for example enable children to study after sunset.
Many small businesses can significantly increase their productivity with a little energy. For instance:
- a shopkeeper who sells food can keep his goods longer fresh with a refrigerator,
- someone can charge phones for his or her fellow villagers,
- a hairdresser may start using a clipper.
It is important that the new trained entrepreneurs can gain enough experience in designing and installing solar systems, under good supervision.
Your small contribution makes this possible and will also make a big difference for a Zambian family.
