Hello ,
A wonderful day to celebrate AFAS awards
This is already the end of the third year of the AFAS Foundation sponsored project: “from autopilot to champion farmer”.
Just like a year ago, we also concluded this year with an AWARD ceremony, which took place on April 30 in Chipata.
Before that day, the farmers visited each other, learned a lot from each other and assessed each other's work. At the ceremony itself, 45 farmers from three locations (Petauke, Chipata and Lundazi) were present.
The following farmers won awards:
- Award for the best female farmer went to: Patricia Zulu 2 from Chipata.
- Three awards for the farmers who have implemented what they have learned the best, one from each location: Elias Phiri from Petauke, Morris Ngoma from Chipata and Olphanos Manyimo from Lundazi.
- Three awards for the farmers who have their bookkeeping in order the best, one from each location: Emmanuel Mumba from Petauke, Patrick Mwale from Chipata and Jastone Zimba from Lundazi.
- The BEST FARMER of the year (both bookkeeping in order, best implemented and most consistent farmer): Jabyson Chongwe from Lundazi.

Celebrating Jabyson Chongwe
In addition to the Award ceremonies, Jacana organized a circuit with 6 activities. Each group with 7 to 8 participants changed activities every 30 minutes.
- Knowledge quiz with questions about what the farmers had learned in the past year.
- Artificial intelligence (AI) quiz, where the farmers had to identify plants and plant diseases with the phone.
- A creative activity where the farmers were allowed to craft their dream farm in groups of 4.
There were three “Jacana Masterchefs” who cooked with the groups. The farmers tasted the dishes that they can make with the vegetables that some farmers grow themselves. These vegetables are less known and farmers hardly eat them themselves or do not know how to prepare them.
-
Wraps with yellow and red peppers, lettuce, eggplant and chicken with a guacamole (avocado sauce).
-
Tomato soup and butternut squash soup with carrots.
- Beetroot salad and yellow, red and green pepper salad.
It was a very successful day and the farmers from the various locations are already looking forward to next year.

Mercy Zulu
Mercy Zulu recently joined the Jacana team in Petauke. Mercy has a technical background and has been introduced to the Jacana way of working in her first few weeks at the head office in Chipata. Here is a video of her helping a drilling team. As you can see, Mercy fits in perfectly with the team.
