Hello ,
New project
Marie-Stella-Maris is sponsoring a project for another 2 years, in which Jacana can provide 65 families with clean drinking water. In this project, we go to more remote areas (an hour's drive). In those areas, the houses are further apart and it is possible for families to use water, in addition to using it for the household, for a vegetable garden (minimum size 20x20m). By setting up and managing the vegetable garden, they can feed their family and sell what is left to the community or at the market. This provides some extra income. While Marie-Stella-Maris provides access to clean drinking water, the setting up and management of the vegetable gardens is sponsored by four other donors: Stichting Werkgroep Een Aarde, Stichting Kringloopwinkel De Kring Reeuwijk, MOV group of the Franciscus parish Asten-Heusden and a private donor.

In addition to the approach that Jacana has been using for years to select families with entrepreneurial potential, they are now also looking at whether the family wants and is able to create a vegetable garden in addition to water for the household.

For many families this means that vegetables can be grown at home all year round, even in the dry season when there is no rain for 6 months. Over the years Jacana has experienced that families like to receive training and guidance in setting up a vegetable garden. Most farmers are used to growing mais, soybeans, peanuts, tobacco, sunflowers etc. in the rainy season and that is different from growing vegetables. After the rains most farmers stop because they do not have access to water.

Making your own organic compost
|
- The families will receive training in organic compost production, where they will learn four types of compost that they can use instead of the chemical fertilizers that are very expensive for them. The manuals can be downloaded here for free.
- The families will receive training in setting up a growing bed nursery for their vegetables and also get information about which vegetables are nutritious, especially for children.
- The families will receive training in how to start up the vegetable garden. Such as creating permanent vegetable beds, planting insect-repellent crops, mulching the soil. Most of the principles are from organic farming.
- The families will receive organic crop protection training. There they will learn to make and use organic protection products made out of resources found in their environment.
- The families will receive a partially sponsored starter package consisting of partially sponsored seeds, spade, rake, water drum and a fence so that animals do not eat the crops.
- All families will receive guidance from Jacana agricultural staff.
Jacana is very grateful to the donors who will provide these remote and often forgotten families with more healthy food and income.
